Benefits of using drawing layers
Level = Beginner

SolidWorks launches SolidWorks 3D Skills Program

Layers can be a useful tool when working with drawings. These layers can be turned on or off to enhance visibility or to suppress drawing items. 2D drawing entities (for example, dimensions, notes, drawing formats) can be controlled to layers. Some items like drawing views and OLE objects cannot be controlled via layers.

The example shown in Figure 1 is the same drawing with the layers turned on and off. These can be turned off temporarily and turned back on later. This could also be used when exporting 2D geometry to a downstream application.

Working with layers
Working with layersThe layer toolbar shown in Figure 2 displays the currently selected layer. When a new 2D sketch entity, note, or dimension is created it is automatically added to that layer.

To create a new layer, change layer visibility, change the active layer, or edit the characteristics of a layer (i.e., name, color, line type, or thickness), select the Layer icon or select the Layer icon from the layer toolbar shown in Figure 2.

When creating a new layer it is good practice to use color to help denote the different layers. This gives a visual clue as to what entities are on a drawing layer.

The Layers dialog box shown in Figure 3 can be used for the following:

  • To select a layer select to the left of the layer name or select the layer within the pull-down menu of the Layer toolbar. All 2D entities are added to the selected layer. The selected layer is denoted with a yellow arrow.
  • To add a layer select the New button and define the layer attributes (i.e., name, description, on/off, color, line style, and thickness) if applicable.
  • To change entities to the selected layer, select the entities and select Move button. The entities are moved to the selected layer.
  • Layers that are turned off show the light dimmed.
  • To change the attributes for a layer, just select the field for the nondescription fields (all fields except for the name and description fields) and change the values. For the name and description fields, double-click on the field and the name can be changed.

Note that if the selected layer is turned off, you can create 2D entities and they will not appear. The layer needs to be turned back on.

Templates
To insure that layers are applied consistently within an organization, the layers should be defined with the drawing document templates. Create the standard layer names and then it is a matter of assigning the 2D sketch entities to the appropriate layer.

Conclusion
Layers can be an effective tool to help organize and segregate 2D entities within a drawing. These layers can be used to help temporarily hide 2D entities and can be used for other downstream applications.
