SolidWorks for Mold Designers

SolidWorks® provides the solution to create high-value complex molds, shorten lead time, and reduce costly mistakes throughout your mold design process.

SolidWorks® provides the solution to create high-value complex molds, shorten lead time, and reduce costly mistakes throughout your mold design process.   The mold industry has seen rising costs and longer cycle times. This trend is accelerated by the challenge to produce more complex molds that generate higher-quality parts.  Since job throughput is the key to running a profitable enterprise, your biggest challenges are meeting ever-decreasing lead-times while maintaining quality. Rework is the biggest threat to profitability, therefore being right the first time is the key. If you are still using 2D, you are probably struggling with lost business due to long lead-times caused by the difficulty of making molds for complex 3D parts and rework due to errors.

Responding to RFP

The Request for Proposal (RFP) process typically starts with customer data; therefore your CAD systems must accept data in a variety of formats.  SolidWorks offers the widest range of data translation formats of any CAD solution. These formats include IGES, STEP, Parasolid®, ACIS®, AutoCAD®, Mechanical Desktop®, Pro/ENGINEER®, and Unigraphics®.

Tooling Design

When designing in 2D, a designer is often unable to determine if the parts fit together until final assembly. SolidWorks lets users build in design intent, making sure parts fit right the first time. Molds are complex and you want to focus your attention on mold design, not on trying to figure out how to run the CAD system.  SWIFT™ (SolidWorks Intelligent Feature Technology) lets users focus on the design by taking care of tedious CAD tasks like fillet and draft creation.  SolidWorks also includes many mold-design-specific tools such as draft and undercut analysis and advanced draft features. SolidWorks also makes complex mold designs easy with automatic core and cavity features, side core and lifter creation, parting lines, and shrinkage control.

Surfaces are used to help design core and cavities in a mold. Shutoffs and split surfaces require flexible and easy-to-use tools to create any geometry, from simple holes to complex surface fills. SolidWorks surfacing tools can easily create parting surfaces for splitting cores and cavities and defining plates for the mold.

To document your designs, SolidWorks production-level drawing and detailing capabilities enable faster and more accurate development of drawings, including automatic generation of drawing and section views, with breakout section views and bills of materials (BOMs) to save time and reduce errors.

Much of your mold components such as ejector pins, core pins, sliders, and lifters are purchased from suppliers. SolidWorks provides 3D ContentCentral SM to let you find vendors, configure components, and download a SolidWorks 3D model directly into your mold assembly. This allows you to focus on your design, not on modeling your vendor parts.

Design Changes
Design changes by customers very late in the design cycle are not uncommon. This is costly since your customers typically do not pay for the rework that may result due to these changes. SolidWorks allows you to make changes quickly and easily — you don't have to settle for a mold design that is less than optimal. In addition, SolidWorks drawings are fully associative, ensuring that changes made anywhere in the process automatically update all project documentation.
Testing and Manufacture

SolidWorks Gold Partners provide integrated CAD/CAM software for SolidWorks.  This means your manufacturing toolpaths can be driven directly from the SolidWorks models.

Other Gold Partner provide additional integrated applications for automating moldbase and electrode design and manufacturing.

SolidWorks understands your needs and provides the tools necessary at every stage of the mold design process.
